Application Process for Graduates of US and Canadian Medical Schools

Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Training Program at the University of California, San Francisco.

ERAS Geographic Preferences and Signaling

Internal Medicine Residency will be participating in this year's ERAS geographic and program signaling process. Priority for application review and interviews will be given to applicants who signal our program. We encourage applicants who are excited about our program to apply and signal their interest.

1. ALL APPLICATION MATERIALS MUST BE SUBMITTED VIA ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service)

PLEASE NOTE: All components of your application (ERAS common application form, transcript, Dean's Letter/MSPE, Letters of Recommendation, USMLE scores, and Personal Statement) MUST BE RECEIVED by us by October 1st. We do not review incomplete applications.

2. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION

ERAS allows four letters of recommendation to be sent to our program in addition to the required Medical Student Performance Evaluation Letter (MSPE or Dean's Letter). One letter should be from the chairman of the Department of Medicine or their designee. At least one of the remaining letters should be from Department of Medicine faculty. Additional letters of recommendation should be from faculty members who have worked with you in a clinical setting, who know you well from research or other scholarly projects, from community involvement experiences, etc. We encourage you to submit letters of recommendation that give our selection committee the broadest possible view of your qualifications and attributes, from as many different perspectives as is possible.

We require three letters of recommendation in addition to the Dean's letter; you may submit an optional fourth letter of recommendation without penalty.

3. USMLE SCORES

We require all applicants to our program to take the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2-CK exams.

There are no minimum USMLE score requirements for application to the residency program. Candidates must have passed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2-CK on their first attempt. UCSF requires applicants to have passed Step 2-CK by February 15 in order to be ranked by our program.

4. PHOTOGRAPHS

Photographs are NOT required to complete your ERAS application. However, since considerable evaluation of your entire application packet occurs for many weeks after your interview on "Applicant Day", a photograph greatly assists us in specifically recalling the details of your virtual interview with us. If you choose to submit a photograph, you can do so at any point in the application process timeline, since you will submit the (scanned) photograph to ERAS, and it will then be forwarded to us.

5. INTERVIEW SCHEDULING AND "INTERVIEW DAY"

Interviews will be scheduled only after our selection committee reviews applications. Complete applications are due October 1st. We will send the virtual interview invitation by email, so be sure to indicate your preferred and accurate email address on your ERAS application. We aim to extend interview invitations between October 21st and November 1st. More details about the interview dates and “Interview Day” will be included in the interview invitation. The “Interview Day” program includes an overview of the residency program, introduction to our educational conferences, and interviews with faculty members and program leadership.

Interview dates: November-December 2024.

IMPORTANT NOTE

If you are a graduate of a medical school other than those in the US or Canada, you must follow different procedures first before applying to the program. Your application will be discarded without first following those outlined steps.
