Internal Medicine Primary Care Tracks

Primary Care Tracks include the UCSF Primary Care General Internal Medicine (UCPC-GIM) Track or the ZSFG (SFPC) Primary Care Track. The two options are particularly well suited for individuals who have already decided upon, or are strongly considering, a generalist focus for their training and career. Applicants with an interest in primary care/general medicine MUST apply to both primary care tracks.

UCSF Primary Care General Internal Medicine Track (UCPC-GIM)

Since 1974, the UCPC-GIM residency program has been training future leaders in primary care and general internal medicine who are committed to building equity in healthcare. Our mission is to provide residents outstanding clinical training in outpatient and inpatient general internal medicine while fostering their skills to lead meaningful change in healthcare. Our three-year program is based at the UCSF Medical Center, one of the nation’s top-ranked non-profit hospitals. Our residency is fully integrated with the larger Department of Medicine Residency providing rotations also at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and the San Francisco VA Medical Center in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Our residents have their primary care clinic at the Mt Zion General Medicine Clinic, UCSF’s largest primary care site, which prides itself on caring for a highly diverse and medically complex population of patients.

ZSFG Primary Care General Internal Medicine Track (SFPC)

The San Francisco General Internal Medicine Primary Care Track was founded in 1982 by Dr. Rick Haber with the vision to provide comprehensive, outstanding, and equitable medical care and advocacy for diverse patients and populations, particularly for those from marginalized groups. We are a three-year residency program at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, one of the top-ranking public hospitals in the country and a part of the UCSF Internal Medicine Residency. Our residents rotate through all of our excellent teaching hospitals including Zuckerberg San Francisco General, UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus, and the San Francisco VA Medical Center. Our 24 SFPC residents have their continuity primary care clinic at The Richard Fine People’s Clinic (RFPC) which was founded in 1970 as one of the first outpatient clinics at a public hospital in the United States and serves over 9,000 diverse patients.
