Dear Colleagues:

We are thrilled to announce the appointment of Priscilla Hsue, MD, Professor of Medicine, as the new Chief of the Division of Cardiology at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center.

Priscilla HsueEarly in her faculty career at UCSF, Dr. Hsue demonstrated her vision and leadership by establishing an HIV-cardiology clinic at ZSFG, one of the first of its kind in the nation. Since that time, she has established herself as a world-renowned expert on the relation between inflammation, immune dysfunction, and cardiovascular disease (CVD), conducting clinical trials of anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and lipid lowering therapies in the setting of HIV, rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis, and recently, COVID-19. She has published over 130 articles on these topics and is principal investigator on numerous NIH grants, including a K24 Midcareer Investigator Award on HIV Viral Reservoirs and Monocyte Activation in HIV-Associated Atherosclerosis and (with Dr. Laurence Huang MD) a K12 Career Development Program Award on Cardiopulmonary, Hematologic and Immunologic Comorbidities of HIV. Dr Hsue is a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigation (she is currently ASCI Secretary-Treasurer) and the Association of University Cardiologists. She has been Chair of the Clinical and Integrative Cardiovascular Science study section at National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, a member of the Office of AIDS Research Advisory Council at the NIH, and a member of the Scientific Committee of the Sarnoff Cardiovascular Research Foundation. At UCSF, Dr. Hsue serves as Co-Director of the Center for Excellence in Vascular Research, and is a member of both the ImmunoX initiative and the Cardiovascular Research Institute.

Dr. Hsue has mentored a dozens of students, residents, fellows, and faculty and is the recipient of multiple mentoring awards, including the UCSF Research Mentor of the Year Award from the UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute Training Program and the UCSF Academic Senate Distinction in Mentoring Award.

Dr. Hsue obtained her B.S. degree at Carnegie Mellon University and attended medical school at UCSF, where she remained for her internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship. She lives in San Francisco with her husband, Dr. Alexander Monto, a gastroenterologist and professor at UCSF, and their three children.

Dr. Hsue will oversee a division comprising 15 faculty and 33 clinical and research staff. The Division’s clinical programs include a general cardiology clinic, multiple subspecialty cardiology clinics (HIV cardiovascular disease, heart failure, structural heart disease, complex coronary disease, pulmonary hypertension, anticoagulation, and geriatric cardiology), a dedicated cardiology inpatient service, cardiology consultation, cardiac catherization (including one of San Francisco’s busiest STEMI programs), echocardiography, electrocardiography monitoring, and stress testing. The ZSFG cardiology inpatient rotation is consistently rated as one of their best educational experiences by UCSF internal medicine residents. The Division’s research programs include work focused on cardiovascular disease in HIV, proteomics and precision medicine, lipid lowering through PCSK9 inhibition and a clinical pharmacology program with an emphasis on the health effects of nicotine, cannabis, and tobacco. The Division also offers a popular CME cardiology course, “Advances in Heart Disease,” now in its 36th year.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Priscilla Hsue on her new leadership role, which will start on October 1, 2020. We would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. Peter Ganz for 11 years of leadership of – and ongoing contributions to – the division, Dr. Mary Gray, for serving ably as interim division chief, and the members of the search committee, particularly Drs.
