UCSF, and our Department of Medicine, are storied organizations, and both have much to be proud of. Our role in the founding of the biotech industry, or in addressing the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and in areas ranging from medical education to patient safety to health disparities… I could go on and on. We are in an enviable position, unquestioned world leaders in the field of academic medicine.

Dear Colleagues: I’m thrilled to announce the appointment of Dr. Jonathan Terdiman, Professor of Medicine, as the new chief of our Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, based at our UCSF Health sites, effective immediately.

Dear Colleagues: I write to describe a new program to support our research faculty, called NIH+. We announced the program at a fabulous research symposium last week, but not everyone could make it so it seemed worth sharing the details of the program. 

This was another fantastic year for the UCSF Department of Medicine. In this note, I’ll highlight some of our major accomplishments in 2018 and a few of the big issues that are likely to take center stage in 2019.
