Arianne Teherani, PhD

Professor In Residence

Arianne Teherani, PhD is Professor of Medicine and Education Scientist in the Center for Faculty Educators at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. She is the Founding Co-Director of the University of California, Center for Climate Health and Equity. Arianne is also the Director for Program Evaluation and Education Continuous Quality Improvement for the School of Medicine.

Arianne’s research advances equity, social justice, and climate solutions in health professions education. Her work identifies and dismantles practices perpetuating educational disparities in health science education, informing conversations, research agendas, and policies globally. Dr. Teherani examines interventions aimed at creating equity during medical training and studies exemplars of success. Arianne co-leads the Equity and Justice in Education initiative and mentors students, residents, fellows, and faculty in health professions education programs. She drives continuous quality improvement, rigorously evaluating innovative education initiatives and programs.

As Founding Co-Director of the Center for Climate, Health and Equity, she lead faculty, students and staff across the University of California 10-campus and 5-health care system to advance equitable and just climate solutions that promote human health and a healthy planet. she spearheads research that focuses on education as a core solution to the climate crisis. Her research examines outcomes of training health professionals on climate-health impacts, decarbonizing health systems through education, and sustainable practices in medical training. Arianne has developed and led multiple climate change and health courses and training initiatives for a range of learners.

Her scholarship shapes an equitable, climate-conscious, and socially just future for health education.

Arianne's research has been featured in venues such as National Public Radio, KTVU, Market Watch, and the Huffington Post. She has served and led leadership roles as a journal editor and in multiple organizations including the Association of American Medical Colleges, American Educational Research Association, and the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. She received the UCSF Faculty Sustainability Award and the UC Sustainability Champion Award. Arianne was named the Faculty Climate Action Champion - an award given to one faculty member at each University of California campus in recognition of their contribution to the mission of sustainability and carbon neutrality. She earned her undergraduate degree in Social Ecology at University of California, Irvine, her masters and doctorate in Education at University of Southern California, and fellowship in Higher Education at University of British Columbia.
