Malcolm John, MD MPH is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) where he is the inaugural Medical Director of Health Equity for UCSF Health, Co-Chair of the Health Equity Council at UCSF Health, and Director of the UCSF Black Health Initiative (BHI). He is also Director of HIV Health Equity at the UCSF 360 Positive Care Center after serving 18 years as Medical Director.
Dr. John is an Infectious Disease physician with expertise in HIV care for diverse populations with emphasis on African Americans/Black Americans as well as HIV & Aging. Interested in advancing care for vulnerable populations, ethnic and age differences in HIV clinical outcomes and comorbidities, reducing healthcare disparities and promoting health equity.
Dr. John was a Dean's Diversity Leader of the UCSF Dean's Office 5-year Differences Matter Initiative through 2020 as the clinical health equity group’s faculty lead for UCSF Health, where he and his collogues played a pivotal role in launching the Health Equity Council at UCSF Health. Motivated to increase his role in organizational change to promote health equity, Dr. John completed a 2 year fellowship with the California Health Care Foundation in 2020, during which he worked on integrating health equity into the quality infrastructure of UCSF Health. He subsequently became a Co-Chair of the UCSF Health Equity Council where he continues to focus on the integration of health equity into the UCSF Health System to ensure all have a fair and just opportunity to reach the optimal health through equitable access to care, clinical outcomes and patient experiences.
Dr. John's other area of focus is working with the Black community to address health disparities. He launched the UCSF Black Health Initiative (BHI) in 2020 to help UCSF be a better partner with the Black community in order to address COVID-19 and related disparities.
Interests include advancing care for vulnerable populations, ethnic and age differences in HIV outcomes and comorbidities, reducing healthcare disparities and promoting health equity. Dr. John is experienced in program development, community collaborations, securing research funding, and in developing and applying new models of HIV care for vulnerable populations across academic and community-based settings.
